CROSSING BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THEATRE & VISUAL ART

CROSSING BOUNDARIES BETWEEN THEATRE & VISUAL ART

Emerie Snyder is a Brooklyn-based theatre director and creator of new performance work, focusing on site-responsive theatre, relationships between visual art and theatre, and solo performance.

EXPLORING UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACHES TO LIVE ART EXPERIENCES

At age five, Emerie announced that her hobby was “thinking about lots of things.” It’s still true.

Emerie makes live performances that bridge theatre/visual art/other forms, often in unexpected spaces, engaging audience members as essential co-creators. Her work explores audience/performance relationships, and how that electric space-in-between is where theatre really happens.

These immersive and participatory experiences blur lines between reality and theatricality, using surprising juxtapositions and absurdist humor to shift audiences’ perspectives and help them look at the world just slightly differently. Questions about memory and communication are a recurring theme—how incredibly difficult it often seems to understand and connect with each other.

Past works include: THIS IS NOT A MUSEUM TOUR, a participatory tour led by a friendly vintage Fisher Price tape cassette player, created for Elsewhere (a museum in a former thrift store in Greensboro, NC); EXHIBIT, an iterative, site-responsive, participatory performance in the form of an art gallery tour, re-adapted to fit each different gallery or museum setting; LEAFY DREAMS, a whimsical solo performance in a community garden, asking audiences to listen closely and discover what plants dream about; ARCHIPELAGO, an evening of short one-person plays about isolation, including newly-commissioned and existing works; and A VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD, an audio-theatrical experience for one listener (commissioned as part of Satellite Collective’s first iteration of TELEPHONE).

Current projects include: RIGHT NOW!, a monthly absurdist online variety show presented by The Tank beginning in March 2021; and DREAM/HOME, a map-based “theatre by mail” experience launching in April 2021 as part of Post Theatrical, a national wave of plays by mail. She is also a participant in the new 2020-2021 iteration of Satellite Collective’s TELEPHONE.
